What Is a Custom Home

Most people have different ideas when it comes to custom homes. Often, people are not exactly sure what a custom home entails. So we try to determine that they want a custom home, and what degree of customization they want. This is achieved by asking many questions about their goals, expectations, and needs so that we can determine exactly what caliber of design they want for their custom home so that we can start the design process. In this post, we will briefly explain the three types of homes and the characteristics of each one.

There Are, Generally, 3 Types of Homes:

  1. Spec Homes: These are move-in-ready homes that have been built with the average homebuyer in mind. They are specifically built and designed to accommodate a wide array of homebuyers and have been outfitted with certain selections that appeal to almost everyone. They are also found in housing developments.

  1. A Semi-Custom Home: A homebuilder will typically have a set of designs that they are familiar with and they can source materials for economically. From this list, potential homebuyers will be able to choose a floor plan that will meet their expectations and fit their family’s needs. Then, they will work with the home builder to customize the layout, selections, finishes, and materials to their liking.

  1. A Custom Home: These are homes that require the buyer to work closely with a design and building team to plan, design, and choose every detail about the home including its construction methods and materials, finishes, and layout, and how it will sit on the plot. And when we say ‘everything’, this literally means everything, right down to the door hardware.
